2001-02 Fellow

Assistant Professor in Medicine

Boston University Medical Campus

What impact did the Sarnoff Fellowship year have on your career?

Being a Sarnoff fellow changed my life – not only because it allowed me to meet my Scientific Advisor (Dr. Daniel Levy, who continues to be an important mentor for me more than a decade later!), but also because it kindled my career in cardiovascular translational research. I had always envisioned a clinical career, and the Sarnoff Fellowship made me change course and pursue a clinician-scientist path.

Why should medical students consider the Sarnoff Fellowship apart from other programs?

Finding positive and productive mentoring relationships is daunting and can be really difficult. What I like most about the Sarnoff Fellowship is that it allows you to become an integral part of this network of amazing people who are all interested in mentoring, and that this network reaches far beyond the actual research fellowship year.

What are your professional aspirations?

I aspire to understand the pathways and mechanisms leading to heart failure, using hypotheses generated on a population-level, and translated into individual patients. Using tools like biomarkers and noninvasive imaging techniques, I hope to identify patients at risk for developing heart failure, with the ultimate goal of preventing heart failure in the future.

What is your greatest professional accomplishment?

Getting my K23 funded – the thought of a 5-year grant had been such a hurdle, and getting it funded provided validation that I was onto something worth pursuing. Now of course I realize it is just the beginning!

What is your most memorable Sarnoff moment?

There are so many - I was nervous about the end of the year talk, so my roommate (Emily Willner) and I practiced our talks in front of each other so many times, that I probably can still give her talk to this day (it was about ACAT2 deficient mice). I also remember riding through the streets of LA in a black oversized SUV with tinted windows during the AHA with my entire Sarnoff class crammed in the back, driven by our 'cruise directors', Sahil Parikh and Shang Loh.

What are your hobbies?

Running after our two girls with my husband, Albert. I also love reading, running, and Tae Kwon Do, and can't wait to dress our 4-year old in a mini-dobok!
