Aarti Asnani, MD

Sarnoff Fellow 2006-07

Resident, Massachusetts General Hospital

What impact did the Sarnoff Fellowship year have on your career?

The Sarnoff year confirmed my desire to specialize in cardiology and helped me define my career plans as a future researcher. I hope to continue to apply the research skills I learned as a Sarnoff fellow to translational projects with a focus on arrhythmias, both as a resident as well as during my fellowship years and beyond. In addition, the Sarnoff Foundation has provided me with a number of mentors, all of whom serve as excellent examples of the many different potential career paths within cardiology. This has been extremely valuable in forming a realistic vision of my future career as a cardiovascular scientist.

Why should medical students consider the Sarnoff Fellowship apart from other programs?

The Sarnoff Fellowship is unique compared to other medical school research programs in that it offers continued mentorship before, throughout, and after the research year, both in the cardiovascular sciences as well as in a variety of other specialties. The opportunity to attend the scientific meeting each year also serves as a great way to keep in touch with the Sarnoff network and continue this mentorship on a long-term basis.

What are your professional aspirations?

I am currently a resident in internal medicine interested in specializing in cardiology. I would like to continue translational research very similar to the research I performed during my Sarnoff year, specifically with a focus on the genesis, risk stratification, and treatment of arrhythmias.

What is your greatest professional accomplishment?

Having the opportunity to work at the Broad Center in Cambridge, MA, during my Sarnoff year and present my work to many of the leading scientists in the country.

What is your most memorable Sarnoff moment?

Meeting Lola Sarnoff at the annual conference, chatting with her about art, and seeing her constant delight at meeting the female Sarnoff fellows each year!

What are your hobbies?

French language and culture, reading, traveling.
